Abandon Street sign | 5th Street, between Brevard St. @ College St. | The sidewalk to the right of this busy thoroughfare had been closed off to accomodate construction of the new Uptown arena that is slated to be the future home of the Charlotte Bobcats franchise beginning in 2005. Special thanks to Stan Schwartz for providing this outstanding pic. |
Goose Crossing sign | Stonewall St. @ Caldwell St. | I was a bit surprised to think that those web-footed creature would want to romp around Uptown's busy streets. Still, you might want to look around and be careful through here, just to make sure. |
I-277/US 74 overhead sign | Brevard St., between 2nd St. @ Stonewall St. [across from Charlotte Convention Center] | This might come across as a sign goof since the I-277 shield is a bit more literal than it needs to be. |
Panthers Parking sign | Tryon St. @ 3rd St. | If you're looking to secure a prime parking spot to catch a Carolina Panthers home game, these signs will direct you to where you need to go. Assuming that is, you actually have a designated parking permit or are a season ticket holder. |
Rezoning sign | East Blvd. @ Dilworth Rd. West | This rather interesting rezoning sign is a byproduct of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission. They are put up whenever a petition is sent to them whenever a change is requested involving the use of a particular piece of land with regard to the local zoning ordinance. |
Trolley Crossing sign | Clanton Rd., just off South Blvd. | Charlotte has a trolley line that connects Uptown to the trendy South End area nearby, along with other places adjacent to the South Blvd. corridor. |

Dual Lane Bend construction sign | I-85 South, somewhere between I-485 and Mallard Creek Rd. | This particular stretch of I-85 had all its traffic lanes moved to the outer edges in an effort to improve traffic flow to this area. Additional lanes, along with a concrete barrier, are being installed to accommodate increasing traffic. For more information, check out the I-85 Widening Project website. |
Eastway-Wendover directional sign | Independence Blvd. @ Fugate Ave., just past Cricket Arena | This odd-shaped directional leads motorists to an off-ramp that serves both roads. This access-controlled intersection was designed along with other improvements to that stretch of highway that is being converted to a freeway. |
Kingstree Speed Limit sign | Starnes Randall Rd. @ Harrisburg Rd. | This rather unique sign serves a reminder that this is a rather new subdivision. Naturally, that means you'll be encountering a lot of traffic from construction crews, realtors, and such. In that case, extreme caution should be practiced here. |
No Soliciting sign | N. Tryon St. @ Harris Blvd., next to Walgreens | There is a city ordinance that makes it unlawful for anyone to panhandle anywhere near busy roads or sidewalks. |
US 29/I-85 directional sign | Strip mall located at corner of N. Tryon St. @ Harris Blvd. | These rather clever signs that are situated at strategic points on the parking lot lead motorists to their destinations quickly and easily. As for this particular one, you have to go past the parking deck in order to access either route number listed. |

Adopt-A-City-Street sign | Park Rd. @ Hamlin Park Rd., next to Harris Teeter | This is a rather clever way for businesses and civic groups to pitch in every once in a while and help make Charlotte's streets clean. Not a bad way to carry out your civic duty. |
City Route 4 sign | Woodlawn Rd. @ Old Pineville Rd., between South Blvd. & I-77 | Believe it or not, Charlotte does have its own highway! City Route 4 basically covers a set of streets that form a semi-circular loop around downtown Charlotte. While not necessarily a "loop road" in the classic sense of the term, it does serve as a boundary between the center city and the ever-growing suburbs. |
High Crash Area sign | Billy Graham Pkwy. @ S. Tryon St. | Traffic congestion is very common along major intersections in the Queen City. Since a number of them are prone to automobile-related accidents, these signs help drivers stay aware and alert when passing through. |
Kings Drive ends-Queens Rd West begins | Kings Drive @ Queens Rd./Morehead St. | One thing Charlotte is notorious for is the constant changing of street names. Once you find yourself driving on one street in particular, it won't be long before you end up on another one without even having to make a left turn. Fortunately, the city was gracious enough to put up these signs to make motorist aware of that fact. This sign was located adjacent to Carolinas Medical Center. |
School crossing sign | Park Rd. @ Smithfield Church Rd. | This sign also serves as a public service to slow down while traveling through the school zone, especially in an area with high traffic volumes. |

Carowinds Blvd. sign gantry | Exit 90 off I-77, near Fort Mill, SC (York County, SC) | Carowinds exit off I-77 does provide the motorist a myriad of options to choose from. Note the first sign for Carowinds with NC 49 in text (third one going left to right). Even though there is a Highway 49 in the Palmetto State, the road that does lead to Carowinds (the aptly named Carowinds Boulevard) connects with that road just over the border in North Carolina. Also, US 21 South doesn't directly lead to Pineville (also in NC); you'll have to take another road from 21 to get there. |
Harrisburg Road warning sign | Robinson Church Rd. @ Rocky River Rd., Harrisburg (Cabarrus County) | The switch in road names actually doesn't occur until you get into Mecklenburg County. Still, at least you're aware of the situation well in advance. |
Jake Alexander Blvd overhead sign array | Lincolnton Rd. @ Jake Alexander Blvd., Salisbury (Rowan County) | The City of Salisbury tends to spread out its overheads so that the motorist can spot the name of the road easily. It may not be much on aesthetics, but highly effective nontheless. |
