Augmented Two-Way Road sign |
Yadkin Rd. (Hwy. 211) @ Page Rd., Pinehurst |
This particular stretch of road has two lanes of
traffic heading away from the famous Pinehurst Traffic Circle nearby, while only one lane heads
toward it. Also worth nothing is that this is a folding sign, meaning it can be changed should
conditions warrant. |
23 MPH Speed Limit sign |
Olmstead Blvd. @ Yadkin Rd. (Hwy. 211), opposite
Beulah Hill Rd. (Hwy. 5), Pinehurst |
In case you're wondering, basketball superstar
Michael Jordan has nothing to do with this. Turns out this non-conforming number was selected to
grab the motorist's attention, not to mention keeping a close eye on the speedometer. |
Dual Speed Limit sign |
US 1 South @ Rosa Rd., just past Hwy. 24-27; Cameron |
Traveling this stretch of road has always been
tricky for those in the trucking industry, since there are a few tight spots along the way. Fortunately, a
new four-lane US 1 Bypass freeway is being built to the east of town that is slated to open prior
to the 2005 US Open in Pinehurst. |
Buggy Crossing sign |
NC Hwy. 24-27 West, near Robbins |
When I drove through here this past summer, I
automatically assumed there might be an Amish or Mennonite community nearby. I also found out that
this sign might indicate a large number of horse-drawn carriages traverse these roads as well. |
Yield to Left sign
[Picture 1]
[Picture 2] |
NW Broad St. @ Vermont Ave., Southern Pines |
This particular street splits into two one-way
causeways over a six-block stretch through the town's business district. Since the railroad tracks
go down the middle, drivers passing through to your left have the right-of-way. This unusual arrangement
has necessitated the need for such signs to be posted at each intersection going in both directions. |
Reduce Speed on NC 22 sign |
Midland Rd. (Hwy. 2) @ Central Dr. (Hwy. 22),
just past US 1; Southern Pines |
It's not every day you come across a sign that
alerts you to slow down on another road, as seen here.

School Entrance sign |
W. Church St. @ US 15-401-501, next to Scotland
County High School; Laurinburg |
This rather big sign does come in handy both at
the beginning and end of each school day, when traffic levels are fairly high. It's also a reminder
to be careful when encountering local teenagers with their own sets of wheels. |
Columnar Street Sign post |
E. Church St. @ Biggs St., Laurinburg |
These unique street posts can be found all over
downtown Laurinburg, which gives it more of a true small-town feel. Not only that, they look real
classy. |
Future I-74 shield |
US 74 West, past West Blvd. overpass; Laurinburg |
No, you are coming down with a case of double
vision here. Turns out that this section of the Laurinburg-Maxton Bypass is as a possible
future designation for one of North Carolina's newest interstate highways. Check out Bob Malme's assessment
for more info. |
